My passion towards film lies all the way back to the year the Titanic was released.
I was 8 years old. I cried like everyone else who watched the movie. The issue was my uncle, though. He was in the film business for some time back in the day and he knew all the tricks that would ruin the magic for me. After the VCD of the film was released we all bought it and watched again and again. A year later, one summer day, my uncle came in with the DVD of the movie and he asked if I watched the movie. I said "of course!" honestly. Then he asked what I thought about it. I told him how much I cried for all those people that was in the ship, how I wish to be loved and love like Rosé and Jack one day and how bad it was to watch a giant ship to sink. He started to laugh, naturally, and asked if I really think that they sank a real ship and killed those people. I said "of course they are actors but how else could they film a ship sinking?" He, continuing laughing, asked if I knew where they filmed those ocean scenes. I said "in the ocean of course!". Well... That was the day my perspective towards cinema was changed forever and the magic I believed the cinema hold was gone, as because my uncle put the DVD on and started to play the behind the scenes of Titanic.
The first time I heard about the term "blue and green screen (in Turkey we call it green and/or blue box)" was while watching the filming diary of Titanic.
I was very disappointed when I saw that they've built half of the ship and the rest of it was open, I was disappointed when I saw they filmed the ocean scenes in a swimming pool and most importantly I was very much disappointed when I saw that the sinking ship was a miniature version of the actual ship and most of the film had to be animated or filmed in Hollywood sets.
In short version I was disappointed but I also was amused. The magic bond between the film and me was gone forever but I've gained magical eyes to built another bond with film and industry.
When I was 16 I've decided to study IT and Media so that I could learn to do the animations I wished to make for my films. Though we studied something entirely different in IT but I loved hat too. Though my passion towards films were growing wildly.
Without any technical or theoretical knowledge I've decided to become a film director. My decision led my friends to many questions to ask to me; for example "who's your favourite director?" "Uhmmmm... Well, whoever directed the Matrix is very amazing." "What makes you say that"? "We'll the story is so great!" "Then that's your favourite script writer or story is by whoever hats your favourite person but you are not talking about the director."
My best friend suggested me thousands of films to watch and directors to follow. He taught me what I needed; another perspective towards the stories that called storytelling strategies.
He made me understand the reason the props in the background was there because they were there to support the story. He made me see the colour strategies, costumes, lighting, shots and most importantly the directing.
I always thank him for making me who I am today.
After the sixth form and Media, I started to study BA Film in University of West London. I learnt more and more until it felt as I needed to see them all in practical works. They worked better than I expected sometimes, but sometimes it was shit. I needed more experience... More education... More...
Then I started to read and watch. I've read how many books and articles about directing and technical side of filming, I don't really know but I did.
I've watched at least 2 films every day, no matter how late or early the time was.
I've prepared myself for the final year of the course.
Now I'm the director of my own 3 minutes drama piece for one module and the art director for the finishing film.
All the preparations and books and films and the hardcore education of 6 years, you would think I'm ready for it all.
I'm very much freaking out.
So, just to get my self confidence back on the track and to seek psychological help, I've decided to write this piece and continue with a diary about these matters.
I sound ready though, don't I?
Note: the photos are some of my research for art directing.
Dağılır her iki taraf, sessizce...
Bir daha yüzleşmemecesine...
Hi there filmmakers.
I used to think I was a filmmaker. I could create miracles from what I have and wow, I knew enough terminology to be the director of the project.
3 years of hard-core filmmaking lessons -practical and theory- in university makes you realise that you are only a small bug walking around, thinking the world turns around you... I was nothing.
Now that we are clear about what I was and what I am now, we can talk about today's subject: making "a character" in your head a hero in your film.
Okay, when we say a hero, what pops in your head? Usual stuff, I presume... Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Batman, Big Daddy (Kick Ass), Tony Montana (Scar Face), God Father.. I think you got the point.
What if I told you that the Dude in the Big Lebowski was also a hero, what would you say? Either "I know, you dumb bitch, get a life." or "get out of here!".
So, if you are one of the people who already knew that the Dude was a hero, get lost right now. This is very much a time wasting reading for you. For those who didn't, enjoy the ride.
Well, the main character is the hero of the film. "Duh!" End of story.
No, read through, its getting more and more fun. I'm joking, it doesn't end here.
First of all, if you think you are a filmmaker, you are not. If you know you're a filmmaker, lets get in touch.
A film starts with an idea. Idea can come to a person everywhere. Trust me when I say everywhere; my last story was written in toilet and don't you dare asking what I was doing in there.
Everyone has a different style of writing, being creative. Some think, some sing, some listen, some stare. It's the matter of the inspiration. My usual inspirations are sentences. I twist some words around and ta-da! I have a story!
Or sometimes I think about a character, I try to become that character, I try to act like that person, think like that person and I imagine what would happen to him. Then ta-da!
So, whatever inspires you, do that and get yourself a nice hard-ass story that you would like to watch on the silver-screen without checking the time.
Let's come up with a story actually, then go step by step. O-kay... tick-tock... Thinking.
Okay, I've got one! So there was this homeless guy who seemed as if he knew everything about the world. People thought he was a wise man but he was an idiot. Though since everyone thought/believed what he said had a meaning, they tried to find the sense themselves and they did, usually. So, one day one of the big guys (high status, suit guy) comes to him and asks stuff. The homeless guy had no idea who this suit guy was. He tells his usual stuff and the suit guy finds him fascinating and then the homeless guy becomes one of the consultants of him and he was no more a simple homeless guy the junkies would listen to. The world would listen to him now.
I just came up with an amazing story. Look at my simple story! It includes insults to politicians! Man, I will earn good money from this. Anyways, back to the subject.
Simple story that has a character, has a point, can be filmed even silent and would still make sense.
What makes my homeless guy the main character?
1- He is the main character of the story and this is his story.
2- He saves the day for those whom would be too lost to be in need of asking questions to a homeless guy.
3- He changes the stereotypical homeless person view of public: marginal example.
I also gave a brief explanation about the character. I said that "he is an idiot". That refers to this:
1- Whatever he says doesn't have any logical value,
2- He is not as smart as people think he is.
Also I have explained the "public" characteristics, as saying "homeless guy is suppose to be a wise man... they make sense out of what he is bubbling about" (not with exact words). That refers to this:
1- Public type in my story is bunch of people who are ready to believe,
2- They have a (good or bad) bias towards characteristics of people,
The Suit guy refers to an educated man who is a politician and therefore is voice of the people he was chosen by. His belief in to the homeless guy refers to how the (good or bad) bias towards characteristics is more than cultural and all Socio-Economic classes affected by it.
Homeless guy's life's changing is only simple ending to this story.
Now, how do we make him a proper hero?
Dialogue. Visual referrals. Sound and visual affects. Dramatising the character. Only logical, because the hero of a film is a person who the audience bond with.
Cont.
Homeless guy explains his life story to a journalist for her to publish it. He explains it all very bravely. All the beatings he survived from his father, all those times he felt lonely because he didn't have a mother as a child, all those years he was married and his wife died on birth, all those nights he looked after his only gift from wife; his son and he died from heart-failure when he was 2 months old.
How he lost his job when the depression kicked in and for 5 years he was homeless, moneyless and lonely. His only friends have been the junkies and people who passed him by looked at him with pitiful and/or disgusted eyes. They didn't know what he went through and they judged him instead of asking or listening...
and this is how you dramatise a character. What's up!
If this brief explanation can make an audience say "aaaaawwwwwwwwww!", it's awesome. If some cry, even better. He is the biggest hero on earth!
So in this piece, I came up with a story, a character and I made him a kick-arse hero.
If I copied and pasted any line in this piece or if I used anyone's idea or whatever, they have every right to sue me. This piece's rights belong to me and NO YOU CANNOT USE THIS PIECE FOR ANY PURPOSE WHATSOEVER! without asking.
Hope you have enjoyed the journey and Deniz Karadaş airlines thanks for choosing us and wishes you a good day. Hope to see you soon again. This is a gift from me to you reader! Enjoy!
İlham bekleyen sanarkarın aslında acıyı beklediğini anladım.
Sanatkar olduğumu söylemiyorum.
Çok eskilerden bir anı gibi herşey. Oldu. Bitti.
I've read 2 books in 3 days. So you can totally imagine what kind of situation I am in. I am doing everything I can to escape from reality.
As such 3 days ago I have watched 4 films in one day.
It doesn't feel right anymore... this... Whatever this called. The stupid reality. This stupid reality. It doesn't feel right.
I've got too many questions. I've got too many wishes. Too many thoughts. Too many mistakes. Too many regrets. Too many maybes. Too many hopes. I don't know who I am. I don't know what I want. I don't know what I should do. All I want to do is to escape from reality and so I read... nonstop. So the book I've finishes first was called "the boy who could see demons". It literally made me think. Mixed my emotions up. It was too good to be true. After the story was finished I've checked for other books of the writer. Will wait. Then I've started and finished "100 strokes of brush before bed" today and I've hated that girl. She was too idiot to see what she was doing to herself. She was an idiot to destroy her teenage-hood just over a heart-break. She went through what everyone does but she was a drama queen that was idiot enough to be blind towards the truth: there is a true love awaits you. So while she was losing hope towards that "perfect love" she became a whore. Awesome.
All I wanted to do was to escape from reality and occupy my head with other things instead of struggling with what I have and here I am, angry at a stupid teenager who turned herself into an orgy whore.
I see lots of memes about best friendship these days. One of them said "best friends never let you do stupid things alone".
So, imagine..
A Chinese guy called Woo breaks into your best-friend's house, pees on his rug and you talk him into find the actual millionaire Lebowski to pay for the rug... just because it really tied the room together.
Your friend agrees and goes to see him. Next thing you know he has been thrown out from the premises with a rug he has taken without the actual dude's permission. You guys don't really care and continue bowling.
The issue is, you guys are in a bowling team together and you never see him play, ever. He is there, though, all the time.. either drinking or talking.
Then things go wrong and the millionaire dude asks your friend Dude to help him to get his ex-porn star wife back as she's been kidnapped. Of course you come up with a perfect plan. You take his car, with a package filled with explosives and a bag filled with your dirty underwear to be given to the kidnappers... so that you guys will take the money.
Your plan fails, you fuck up his car, millionaire dude's wife's toe has been cut and next thing you know, your best friend tell you to fuck off! What a Dude, right!
Anyways, after everything happens, the kidnapper nihilist guys puts Dude's car on fire and attacks your pacifist friend which causes a deadly heart-attack. He dies.
You and Dude takes his ashes and you say some clever things and then try to throw the ashes on the ocean. Though you fail because of the wind and you make your best friend cover in those ashes.
Not cool man...
Next thing you know, you turn to your friend and say "fuck it, lets go bowling".
Though, again, you have never seen your friend play it with you, ever.
This is an epic story of best-friendship by Coen Brothers, called The Big Lebowski.
