Art of Directing | Preparations

My passion towards film lies all the way back to the year the Titanic was released.
I was 8 years old. I cried like everyone else who watched the movie. The issue was my uncle, though. He was in the film business for some time back in the day and he knew all the tricks that would ruin the magic for me. After the VCD of the film was released we all bought it and watched again and again. A year later, one summer day, my uncle came in with the DVD of the movie and he asked if I watched the movie. I said "of course!" honestly. Then he asked what I thought about it. I told him how much I cried for all those people that was in the ship, how I wish to be loved and love like Rosé and Jack one day and how bad it was to watch a giant ship to sink. He started to laugh, naturally, and asked if I really think that they sank a real ship and killed those people. I said "of course they are actors but how else could they film a ship sinking?" He, continuing laughing, asked if I knew where they filmed those ocean scenes. I said "in the ocean of course!". Well... That was the day my perspective towards cinema was changed forever and the magic I believed the cinema hold was gone, as because my uncle put the DVD on and started to play the behind the scenes of Titanic.

The first time I heard about the term "blue and green screen (in Turkey we call it green and/or blue box)" was while watching the filming diary of Titanic.

I was very disappointed when I saw that they've built half of the ship and the rest of it was open, I was disappointed when I saw they filmed the ocean scenes in a swimming pool and most importantly I was very much disappointed when I saw that the sinking ship was a miniature version of the actual ship and most of the film had to be animated or filmed in Hollywood sets.
In short version I was disappointed but I also was amused. The magic bond between the film and me was gone forever but I've gained magical eyes to built another bond with film and industry.

When I was 16 I've decided to study IT and Media so that I could learn to do the animations I wished to make for my films. Though we studied something entirely different in IT but I loved hat too. Though my passion towards films were growing wildly.

Without any technical or theoretical knowledge I've decided to become a film director. My decision led my friends to many questions to ask to me; for example "who's your favourite director?" "Uhmmmm... Well, whoever directed the Matrix is very amazing." "What makes you say that"? "We'll the story is so great!" "Then that's your favourite script writer or story is by whoever hats your favourite person but you are not talking about the director."

My best friend suggested me thousands of films to watch and directors to follow. He taught me what I needed; another perspective towards the stories that called storytelling strategies.
He made me understand the reason the props in the background was there because they were there to support the story. He made me see the colour strategies, costumes, lighting, shots and most importantly the directing.

I always thank him for making me who I am today.

After the sixth form and Media, I started to study BA Film in University of West London. I learnt more and more until it felt as I needed to see them all in practical works. They worked better than I expected sometimes, but sometimes it was shit. I needed more experience... More education... More...
Then I started to read and watch. I've read how many books and articles about directing and technical side of filming, I don't really know but I did.
I've watched at least 2 films every day, no matter how late or early the time was.

I've prepared myself for the final year of the course.

Now I'm the director of my own 3 minutes drama piece for one module and the art director for the finishing film.

All the preparations and books and films and the hardcore education of 6 years, you would think I'm ready for it all.
I'm very much freaking out.

So, just to get my self confidence back on the track and to seek psychological help, I've decided to write this piece and continue with a diary about these matters.

I sound ready though, don't I?

Note: the photos are some of my research for art directing.

Taraf.

Dağılır her iki taraf, sessizce...
Bir daha yüzleşmemecesine...

Önemli olan savaşmaktı.

Bu savaşta doğru ve yanlış vardı.

Önemli olan doğru tarafta yer almaktı.

Gerçi, pek umursadığım söylenemez.
